Case Study: Mount Holland Lithium Project
Project Overview
The Mount Holland Lithium Project is a significant venture aimed at extracting lithium, a critical component in battery production. To facilitate this project, we developed a specialised solution for an inclined pipeline where standard products would be a risk to pipeline integrity. Protection against galvanic corrosion to the pipeline was also critical.
Challenge
The project required a stainless steel DN150 pipe to be supported, at a 1-degree incline relative to supporting structural steel, while allowing axial pipe movement parallel to the TOS (Top of Steel). Traditional designs did not account for this slope, and with a focus on pipeline integrity and minimising stress in the pipe system, a different approach was needed.
Solution
To address the project requirements, we engineered a custom pipe shoe using carbon steel ASTM A36, galvanised to ASTM A153 for enhanced corrosion resistance. A neoprene isolator was factory-bonded to the inside of the clamps to prevent galvanic corrosion between the pipe and the pipe shoe, ensuring long-term durability.
Key modifications included:
Incline Adjustment: The otherwise standard pipe shoe was specifically modified to accommodate the 1-degree incline, allowing for excellent fit-up with the rest of the system and proper, controlled support.
Base of Pipe (BOP) Dimension: We designed the BOP dimension to be 100mm at the centre of the pipe shoe, ensuring a secure fit and optimal performance for the inclined setup.
Results
The modified pipe shoe successfully met the project’s requirements, providing a reliable and durable solution for the inclined pipeline. Whilst a 1 degree incline may seem almost irrelevant, this ensured the piping system was properly supported, and the pipe and related components were not subjected to any excessive loads. The neoprene isolator effectively mitigated the risk of galvanic corrosion, contributing to the longevity of the installation.
